Groundwater & Solute Transport Modeling

Computer modeling is a valuable tool used to aid our understanding of natural systems. Simulations of groundwater flow and solute transport provide valuable insight into aquifer behavior and in many cases, are essential for locating and evaluating the performance of wells and the design of remedial systems.

Using groundwater flow and solute transport models has become expected and even required by regulatory agencies. Modeling has also become more cost-effective and necessary as technology continues to improve and as regulatory agencies become more focused on predictive evaluations.

Capabilities

Summit’s personnel have expertise in analytical and numerical modeling and are able to tailor modeling efforts to the specific requirements of each project. Our modeling capabilities enable the following services:

  • Aiding in the evaluation and development of conceptual models of aquifer conditions, including the effect of groundwater-surface water interactions and the interaction of multiple aquifer systems;
  • Delineating capture zones and wellhead protection areas for existing or proposed pumping wells;
  • Aiding in the design of drilling and well installation programs;
  • Evaluating the nature of dissolved and multiple-phase chemical constituent transport mechanisms to be used for risk assessment and as a guide for field activities;
  • Supporting litigation efforts by providing simulations of historical and future conditions; and
  • Reviewing existing or proposed models developed by other firms and determining if the models are appropriate and accurate for the intended use.

Summit’s capabilities vary from simple analytical groundwater flow modeling to complex
numerical flow and solute transport modeling. During integration, as part of an Aquifer
Wellhead Protection or Resource Management Program, or aiding in the evaluation and
development of remedial investigations and assessments, an appropriate match is
made to assure that the work proceeds as efficiently and effectively as possible.
