REMEDIAL DESIGN/ REMEDIAL ACTION
Summit completes remediation system designs (RD) and remedial
actions (RA) for surface and subsurface contamination with a phased
approach. Using data gathered during a remedial investigation
and remedy selection from a feasibility study, Summit typically
proceeds with the following phases:
- Preliminary design and pilot testing;
- Completion of the final RD;
- Implementation of the RA; and
- Site closure.
Summit’s design engineers and experienced field staff utilize
previously gathered data in clarifying and defining the RA requirements.
We prepare the final design and engineering information needed
to apply for regulatory permits and funding sources. Summit completes
construction specifications showing the character and extent of
the project and obtains competitive bids for implementation of
the RA.
We follow the RA to site closure using Summit technicians, or
Summit will train your staff to complete the implementation. Summit
prepares and submits status and closure reports which include
results of data collected during the implementation and site monitoring.
Product Recovery Systems
This free-phase product recovery system utilizes a 100 gallon
per minute groundwater treatment system. The system incorporates
an aeration tank, packed tower air strippers, and granular activated
carbon filters to maintain effluent concentrations below discharge
limits. The effluent from this system was discharged on site to
an infiltration trench eliminating the need for more costly effluent
disposal.

Experience
Summit has successfully completed and implemented RD/RAS at over
1,000 sites throughout the United States. We have experience with
remediation of chlorinated and non-chlorinated volatile organic
compounds (VOCs); petroleum products, including recovery of non-aqueous
phase liquids (NAPL); and inorganic contaminants such as metals,
nitrates, and corrosives. Remediation technologies utilized by
Summit include:
- Phytoremediation
- Oxygen Release Compound Injection (Geoprobe®)
- Air Sparging
- Slurry Wall/ Barrier
- Soil Vapor Extraction
- Low and High Temperature Desorption
- Groundwater Pump and Treat
- Soil Bioremediation
- NAPL Recovery
- Soil Spreading and Landfarming

Our ability to successfully combine innovative technologies with
standard engineering practices enables us to produce cost effective
RD/RAs for our clients. Additional cost savings and improved efficiency
may be realized during operation of a remediation system by utilizing
remote monitoring and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition
(SCADA). This technology enables instrumentation and control units
at your site to be accessed via modem or radio. Current conditions
are observed remotely from your office in real-time. Operation
of process equipment can be adjusted remotely while the results
of modifications are directly observed, and historical information
is downloaded into a database or Geographical Information System
(GIS).
We believe in thorough characterization of the subsurface and
providing flexibility in RA design and operation. This allows
us to adjust to changing site conditions and reduce the time to
closure, therefore reducing overall costs and improving client
service.
