Various State and Federal programs including voluntary cleanup
actions, CERCLA, and RCRA, require owners and operators of hazardous
waste sites or hazardous substance releases, including releases
from underground storage tanks, to be responsible for cleanup
costs and damages relating to these releases. Summit knows the
baseline regulatory requirements for these programs and conducts
an RI/FS on behalf of our client when a significant release has
occurred which cannot be simply contained or removed.
The goal of a remedial investigation is to cost effectively characterize
the physical and chemical structure of the subsurface and actual
or potential impacts of the release to human health and the environment.
Summit has conducted over 1,500 mitigations and investigations
for petroleum and hazardous substance releases across the United
States. Summit has established a solid reputation for managing
both routine and sensitive projects with rapid, thorough characterization
of the subsurface using both conventional and innovative technologies.
Summit brings added value to your remedial investigation by utilizing
field time as efficiently as possible and maximizing data collection
and data quality.
Experience
Summit has successfully utilized the following remediation technologies:
- Rotasonic drilling techniques for fast soil sample collection
in difficult geologic conditions;
- Geoprobe® for direct conductivity, vapor, soil, and groundwater
sampling;
- On-site analytical laboratory for immediate analysis of vapor,
soil, and water samples;
- Site-wide geophysical characterization with electromagnetics
and ground penetrating radar; and
- Delineation with Global Positioning System and Geographical
Information Systems (GPS/GIS).

Our experienced field personnel understand the scope of remedial
investigations and control the direction of the project with your
objectives and a focus toward site closure in mind.
Feasibility studies utilize information from the remedial investigation
to identify and evaluate alternative response actions and the
feasibility and effectiveness of their implementation. Summit’s
feasibility study experience ranges from small projects with one
or two presumptive technical remedies to large-scale projects
requiring evaluation of many alternatives and process options.

Summit believes our clients have a role in selecting a suitable
remedy, and benefit from a realistic evaluation and analysis of
closure options taking into account cost, effectiveness, implemetablity,
and acceptance. Summit controls cost and increases progress towards
remedy selection by combining our knowledge and experience with
real-time site-specific data collected during the remedial investigation.
Summit has successfully defended, implemented, and continues
to consider risk assessment, natural attenuation, and innovative
technologies in the range of reasonable and cost effective alternatives
for our clients.
